Family History Research

I may have no formal training in design, but come with 25 years life experience as an officer in the Royal Navy. My last few years in the Service were spent being responsible for internal communications within Devonport Naval Base. A key part of this role was acting as editor of the Devonport News, a weekly in house publication for all naval and MOD civilian personnel in the Plymouth area. It was here that my love of working with text and images began to develop.

In 1978 I graduated from the University of Southampton, with a second class degree in Economics. On graduation, my first career was in banking with National Westminster Bank plc as a graduate management trainee. However, wanderlust soon took over and in the autumn of 1979 I started my training with the Royal Navy at Britannia Royal Naval College, Dartmouth, as a Supply and Secretariat officer.ajaxgib

Routine administration, the many aspects of managing naval personnel and the staffing of promotion reports seem to have comprised a major part of my career. One of my first appointments as a Lieutenant was in the Leander Class frigate, HMS Ajax, working as Secretary to the Captain of the First Frigate Squadron (the ship is pictured here, south of Europa Point, Gibraltar in 1985).

Twelve years later I was back in Gibraltar, this time as a Lieutenant Commander on the staff of Headquarters British Forces with a number of different areas of responsibility including disciplinary matters and the welfare of Service personnel.

On retirement from the Navy I set up my own design business and have worked with a number of clients to produce a variety of publications that fulfill their needs. In 2010 I widened my services to include family history research and since then have worked with various individuals to build their own bespoke family trees.
